after midterm presentation our tasks are something like it:
1) doing some of the " bifurcations" 3 dimensional near the sea basin area.
2) making the " enclosure" of the functional mass
3) Future use of the site after the expo 2012.

So is it possible to make the project an " Eco park" after the expo so that it will be related to biolgical analogy?

Here are few lower level perspectives. Fig 01 depicts the habour basin area which will contain informations about the condition of different seas around the world. Fig 02 shows the entry level plaza area. Fig 03 depicts that sea water is inserted into the deeper part of the entry plaza so that people can feel the presence of the sea from the very beginning.

fig 01: simplest situation. Glueing 2 strings at corners so that they can gain the strength .

fig 02: glueing multiple strings at differnt locations. These locations gain strength to hold the rest of the parts.

fig 03: vertical postion : glueing multiple strings at differnt locations vertically. It becomes stronger.

fig 04: another simple way to gain strength: twisting.

fig 05: stitching: at the centre. But it would be better to have thinner strings. Thinner strings could be braided better.

Braiding, Weaving and Bifurcations…

This semesters studio is focused on the idea of tangled structures—massively distributed networks made up of relatively weak cross-linked fibrous components that are the dominant mode of formation of structures in nature. This elegant concept of material assembly follows a long lineage in architectural history, from gothic interweaving to Art Nouveau braiding; textile techniques from two- to three-dimensional weaving (Miyake, Northsails); Fine Arts from Pollack to Eliasson; Mathematics from topology to tangle theory; and science from advanced composites to tissue engineering demonstrate the omnipresence of this concept of matter assembly. A crucial characteristic of this structural morphology is that patterning, form, and organization are an inherent conditions emerging out of the design process. The studio projects will explore in depth the aesthetics and performative parameters of tangled and patterned surface conditions as an alternative to prevailing assembly strategies in a contemporary design environment, using the most advanced digital design tools and computer controlled fabrication methods, such as 3D printers and Laser Cutters. Design research is conducted into the architectural potential for this idea in the context of advanced engineering and contemporary construction methods.

The main task of the studio is to explore braiding, weaving and bifurcations as design tools for urban scale structures. The site and program for these explorations is the Expo 2012 in Yeosu, Korea. The site offers the opportunity to work on distributed, tangled networks along the coastline of the Expo Project. All the necessary data, such as plans and information about the site will be available from the studio master. Due to the size of the project group work is encouraged, limited to a maximum group size of 3 students.

This investigation wishes to explore the potential of weaving as an alternative method of construction in architecture. While traditional building methods of construction are based on stapling (bricks), casting (concrete) and welding elements (space frames and trusses) new architectural languages are often in discordance with the building methods used.

Weaving offers structural stability without glue, nails or any sort of binding material; the weaving itself is the binding solution.

THEVERYMANY is an project which is required to weave through an existing primary direction (or loom) which is non linear - basically a set of "randomly" weaved curves not following one overall set of rules - therefore as no under laying order or "grid" one can't expect within the loops to understand its front, back, left & right neighbors, and therefore if those are up or down... no global sequence of weave can't be applied...

Explorations of industrial braiding and weaving led to the design of a grammar capable of describing and generating woven strands. Weaver applies the pattern to a user-defined surface.
